WHO WE ARE
Alan Bauer, general manager and editor of Elauwit, LLC, is a 20-year veteran of newspaper publishing who has been a principal in a group that owned and operated weekly newspapers in Haddonfield, N.J., and Staten Island, N.Y. He is founder and president of Profitable Papers. His role on both the editorial and management sides of newspaper groups has led to extensive experience in every facet of publishing at both large and small operations.
Having started his career as a reporter with small weeklies and dailies in his native Tennessee, and in Pennsylvania, Bauer also spent 11 years with the Gannett Corporation. He served in various editorial roles, including editorial page editor of The Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, N.J., The Idaho Statesman in Boise, Idaho, and The Jackson Sun in Jackson, Tenn. Three times he won Gannett’s highest award – Best of Gannett – for editorial writing.
In 2003, he became a principal and the General Manager of Elauwit Media on Staten Island, publisher of numerous newspapers and shoppers. At the time of acquisition, the company consisted of one small weekly paper and an unprofitable shopper. Revenues were approximately $400,000.
Upon his departure in mid-2004, the company had launched an alternative weekly, a home guide and a business-to-business publication, in addition to growing the weekly community newspaper. Also, the company had been sold to an investment group. A shopper eventually was purchased, making Staten Island Media Group the second-largest publishing firm on the Island. Revenues were well in excess of $1 million.
In late 2004, Bauer became a principal and the General Manager and Editor of The Haddonfield Sun, a start-up community newspaper in Haddonfield, N.J. In fewer than 18 months, Elauwit's presence in South Jersey has grown to four weekly newspapers serving the most exclusive communities and a market-leading monthly business publication. Expansion in 2006 will bring weekly circulation to almost 100,000.
Throughout his career, Bauer has developed a network of colleagues who are experts in various aspects of newspaper publishing. These individuals will be called upon, as necessary, to lend their experience and ideas as we develop your consultation. However, to assure anonymity, the name of your publication and sensitive information will not be shared with them.
